“Scarface” actress Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio looked just like any other New Yorker while riding the West Village subway recently.
The 67-year-old actress went unnoticed as she took her seat wearing jeans, a down jacket, earmuffs and mittens, carrying shopping bags.
Mastrantonio made her Broadway debut as a stand-in in the 1980 revival of West Side Story, and three years later made her screen debut as Al Pacino’s sister in Scarface.
A modern-day classic, this violent gangster film was directed by Brian De Palma and also starred Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert Loggia, and Steven Bauer.
She went on to appear in a number of blockbuster films, including The Color of Money, co-starring Tom Cruise and Paul Newman, for which she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
She also gained attention for her role as Marian in 1991’s Robin Hood, alongside Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman.
Mastratonio’s other film credits include 1989’s The Abyss with Ed Harris and 2000’s The Perfect Storm with George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg.
The Oscar nominee continued to act on stage and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role in the 2003 Broadway revival of Man of La Mancha.
Mastrantonio last appeared on screen last year as Isabella Spezzano in Law & Order: Organized Crime.
She married British director Pat O’Connor, known for “January Man,” in 1990 and they have two sons.
The family lived in the UK for several decades before returning to the US in the 2010s.
