Savannah Guthrie will be stepping down from hosting NBC’s 2026 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony as her mother, Nancy Guthrie, remains missing, Page Six exclusively reveals.
The “Today” anchor, 54, was scheduled to fly to Italy for the opening of the 2026 Olympics on Friday — where he was scheduled to co-host the ceremony with Terry Gannon — but sources said he likely would not be able to attend.
Savannah was scheduled to spend a week in Italy taping “Today” with her former co-host Hoda Kotb, who is in Italy during the Olympics.
“There’s no way Savannah would be there,” the NBC source said.
Page Six has reached out to Savannah’s representatives and NBC Sports for comment.
Shaun White, a three-time gold medalist in snowboarding, was scheduled to be in the broadcast booth with Savannah and sports commentator Gannon.
This year’s Olympics will be held from February 6th to February 22nd in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. The coverage is airing on NBC and streaming on Peacock.
This performance would have been the fourth time Savannah has hosted an Olympic opening ceremony, following the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, and the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics.
When her job covering the 2026 Winter Olympics was announced in September 2025, Savannah said in a statement: “I couldn’t be more excited to co-host the opening ceremony with the incomparable Terry Gannon and snowboarding legend Shaun White. It’s an honor to celebrate the world’s best athletes and bring the magic and wonder of the Winter Olympics and Northern Italy to a national audience.”
Nancy, 84, was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood near Tucson, and her family reported her missing late Sunday morning.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos acknowledged at a press conference Monday that Nancy’s disappearance is being treated as a crime.
“Now that we have processed that crime scene, we believe there is an actual crime scene, there was an actual crime, and we are asking for the community’s cooperation,” Nanos explained, insisting that Nancy “did not leave on her own.”
Police said members of the church first called the family to tell them that Nancy did not show up for church service on Sunday morning, and worried relatives called police. Her family dropped her off at her million-dollar home just after 9:30 the night before.
Mr Nanos said Nancy was “in poor physical health” but “cognitively intact” and “in a sound state of mind”.
Authorities have Nancy’s cellphone in their possession and plan to analyze it for clues, Nanos said, appealing to the public to cooperate with the investigation.
Savannah was absent from Monday’s episode of “Today,” but released a statement to her co-hosts saying, “On behalf of our family, we would like to thank everyone for your thoughts, prayers, and messages of support. Right now, our focus is on the safe return of our beloved mother.”
“We appreciate the efforts of law enforcement in this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900,” the statement added.
Savannah’s fellow Today host Jenna Bush Hager also revealed that Nancy is likely “medicate-free” as she takes “every day” the medication she needs to “survive.”
Savannah has always had a strong bond with her mother and is the youngest of Nancy’s three children with her husband Charles Guthrie. When Savannah was in high school, her father died suddenly of a heart attack.
