Pop icon Cher laughed so hard at the Grammys that she mistakenly called Luther Vandross on stage instead of Kendrick Lamar.
The “Believe” songstress was scheduled to present the Record of the Year award at the Los Angeles ceremony on Sunday, but she appeared to lose sight of the task as she rambled on about her career before making her way off stage.
Host Trevor Noah stopped Cher in her tracks and asked her to present her with the coveted award before she left.
The 79-year-old legendary singer then returned to the microphone to make the announcement, stopped and looked to the side before admitting he thought the winner would be flashed at the teleprompter.
After opening the envelope and accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award at the ceremony, the hitmaker enthusiastically announced the winner as Vandross, but the actual award went to Lamar and SZA from “Luther.”
She quickly corrected herself and exclaimed that the honor actually went to Lamar.
The eight-time Grammy winner, who boasted an astounding 33 nominations during his career, passed away in 2005 at the age of 54.
Fans took to social media to acknowledge the failure.
“Cher said the Grammys were going to Luther Vandross. She wasn’t that far away. I love that she recognized him. I missed him so much,” one person wrote on X, while another added, “Waiting for the Cher meme… oh she’s too funny…”
“Cher was ecstatic saying Luther Vandross has beautiful depth. Unbelievable,” a third commented, while a fourth joked: “Love how excited Cher is to be back to give Luther Vandross his #Grammy.”
Another chimed in: “‘And the Grammy goes to Luther Vandross’ It will never change, Cher will never change.”
Cher is no stranger to the Grammys. The popular vocalist received a Grammy Award from the Recording Academy for his 1998 megahit “Believe.”
The songstress’ music career began in the 1960s and has lasted more than 60 years.
