Elon Musk criticizes Christopher Nolan for starring Lupita Nyong’o in ‘Odyssey’

Elon Musk on Sunday complained to X that two-time Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan had “lost his integrity” while discussing the role of Helen of Troy, supposedly played by Lupita Nyong’o in “The Odyssey.”

On Sunday morning, an X user claimed that Nyong’o’s portrayal of Helen of Troy was an “insult” to Homer, the Greek poet who wrote “The Odyssey” around 700 BC. Homer originally described this fictional character as “fair-skinned, blond-haired, and with the face that launched a thousand ships,” for she was so beautiful that people started wars over her. Musk later commented on the post, saying, “Chris Nolan has lost his integrity.”

Variety magazine reported on Nyong’o and Nolan teaming up in November 2024, but it wasn’t until December of the following year that the project was revealed to be “Odyssey.” Nyong’o’s role in the film is yet to be confirmed. Other cast members include Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, and Elliot Page.

The newest addition to the Odyssey cast is 10-time Grammy nominee Travis Scott. His role was revealed in a television spot that aired during Fox’s NFL AFC Championship Game broadcast. In the teaser, Scott stands on a table and demands the attention of a room full of soldiers, including Telemachus of Holland and Menelaus of Vental.

Universal declined Variety’s request for comment about Scott’s casting.

“The Odyssey” is the first narrative film to be shot entirely with Imax cameras. This technical feat was previously impossible because Imax cameras were too noisy to capture quiet, intimate scenes. However, thanks to a new film casing called “airship”, the noise was significantly reduced.

“The airship system is a game changer,” Nolan told Empire Magazine. “You can shoot your feet in the face (whispering) and get a usable sound. What that opens up is an intimate performance moment in the most beautiful format in the world.”
