Charo talked about her views on aging and why she values the wisdom she has now.
The 75-year-old “Love Boat” alum said she’s choosing to embrace growing older and that it boils down to making positive choices.
“There are two choices. It’s very simple,” she explained to FOX News Digital in an interview published Sunday.
“One is I’m going to despair, I’m going to cry, I’m going to be depressed, I’m going to feel terrible. And the other is, uh, I’m going to be smart and choose the second option,” she continued. “No one is going to mess with me like they used to. I’m going to learn from my mistakes.”
Charo said she was still looking for “a new adventure.”
“I’m going to take care of myself,” she added, but also said she has no problem having a glass of champagne or chocolate.
Charo said there is more to look forward to.
“You learn something every year,” she said. “Every year something new happens. Every year you make new friends.”
“So it’s better to be alive and smart than to sit in a corner crying feeling stupid,” she added. “I choose my second choice.”
The Spanish singer and actress reflected on continuing to work after her husband, Kel Rusten, died by suicide in 2019.
Charo admitted he felt “lost” after the incident, but over time he learned to accept it.
“As time went on, I grew up and understood his death. All I can do is look at his picture and pray for him,” she said. “But as you grow up, you start thinking, ‘Okay, God, let me live. What can I do? Can I enjoy life?'”
Charo spoke about her late husband in July 2019, saying she had “no clue” that he would take his own life.
The two have been married for over 40 years and have a son, Shell, who is now 44 years old.
“He was the best husband, the best father, the best companion…He shot himself at 9 o’clock (Feb. 18) and he didn’t want me to find out,” she recalled during an appearance on “The Talk.”
However, she eventually finds him in an alley.
“‘He didn’t fall, he put a bullet in his head,'” she said the police told her. “At that moment, I got shot in the heart.”
Rusten was 79 years old.
