Dakota Johnson has been in the spotlight since birth as the daughter of Hollywood stars Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson. Dakota Johnson and Jordan Masterson started dating around 2012. In March 2014, Dakota told ELLE that Masterson remodeled her home as a Christmas present.
“He gave me a double think!” she shared. “He did it himself. I think double sinking is key in any relationship.”
Masterson is part of a family of actors, including The Walking Dead’s Alana Masterson and Danny Masterson, who are deeply involved in the Church of Scientology. In 2013, the Daily Mail reported that Masterson was uncomfortable with Johnson’s fame associated with the Fifty Shades series and some of the explicit scenes in the film, and encouraged her to become involved with Scientology. Johnson was first linked to Coldplay’s Chris Martin in October 2017, when they were spotted having dinner at Sushi Park in Los Angeles. According to People magazine, the pair appeared “cozy, laughing and affectionate.”
In December, a source confirmed to US Weekly magazine, “Dakota and Chris are definitely dating. They’ve gotten to know each other well and are very comfortable with each other. Chris has been sending Dakota his music to get her opinion. It’s more than just a fling.”
For the next eight years, the couple kept their relationship secret, never walking red carpets together and rarely appearing together in public, although they occasionally attended events together.
In 2020, Martin’s ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow spoke about her friendship with Johnson in a cover story interview with Harper’s Bazaar.
“I love her,” Paltrow said. “I know it seems weird because it feels unconventional. But in this case, I think I just adore her, just having gone through it over and over again. Days later, a source told People magazine that Johnson and Martin had been engaged for some time.
A source close to the couple said, “(The two) got engaged many years ago, but they were in no hurry to get married.”
Rumors that the relationship between the two was on the rocks began circulating in August 2024. On August 16, sources claimed to the Daily Mail that Johnson and Martin had broken up.
“Chris and Dakota have been trying really hard to make their relationship work over the past few months,” a source claims. “While they will always have a love for each other, they have both come to the conclusion that this relationship cannot be sustained long-term. They are both busy people, Chris is in Europe with Coldplay, and have personal priorities, passions, and work commitments that don’t naturally intertwine with each other. According to E!, a rep for the couple denied this statement and said rumors that the two had broken up are “untrue.” “They are happy together.”
In June 2025, multiple sources told People magazine that Martin and Johnson’s relationship had broken off for good following reports that it remained on-and-off.
