The Season 3 trailer for the Apple TV+ comedy “Shrinking” depicts Michael J. Fox’s return to acting after taking a break from his career in 2020 due to a speech impediment associated with his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis.
The trailer shows him sitting near Dr. Paul Rhodes (Harrison Ford) in the waiting room of a medical facility.
“What are you here for?” asks Fox’s character, whose name we don’t yet know. “Parkinson’s disease. What about you?” Paul replies. “I’m just going to cut my hair,” Fox said dryly, and they both laughed.
Ford’s character in Shrinking has been suffering from Parkinson’s disease since season 1, and although he initially tries to hide the disease and the severity of his symptoms, over time he is forced to deal with the disease head-on.
Fox’s casting for “Shrinking,” announced in May, reunites him with series co-creator Bill Lawrence, who starred in Lawrence’s ABC comedy “Spin City” for four seasons before leaving in 2000 due to Parkinson’s disease-related issues. Additionally, Fox had a memorable guest arc on “Scrubs,” also produced by Lawrence.
The trailer also features a reunion between series co-creator and star Jason Segel and How I Met Your Mother co-star Cobie Smulders, who plays Jimmy’s (Segel) new girlfriend Sophie. Smulders first joined the series in season 2 in a short-lived guest role. The new trailer shows Sophie stopping by Jimmy’s house to say goodbye, before Liz (Christa Miller), Derek (Ted McGinley) and Sean (Luke Tenney) chide him for not asking her out on a date. The trailer also shows Jimmy dealing with his emotions as his daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell) prepares to go to college.
