They say elephants never forget, but this controversial accessory also went unnoticed.
Kim Kardashian recently came under fire for carrying what appeared to be an extremely rare Hermès Birkin bag made from elephant skin in a scene on Hulu’s new show All’s Fair.
In a Vogue Hong Kong interview with stylist Soki Mak, who worked with Kardashian on the series, the polarized handbag also appears in a behind-the-scenes photo, presumably taken during the 45-year-old star’s wardrobe fittings.
According to PETA, Hermès has never actually sold an elephant leather bag, but the luxury brand made a series of carryalls from the skins of elephants supposedly shot on safari in the 1980s. Ultra-rare bags can fetch up to $125,000 or more on resale sites.
And when luxury expert Daniel Wesson (aka @birkinjunky) shared a post about Kardashian’s character Alura Grant carrying the infamous Birkins elephant, many Instagram users, including Ireland Baldwin, were horrified.
“This is… beyond that,” Baldwin commented.
The 30-year-old model and actress reposted a shot of the Skims founder holding the bag on her Instagram Story, writing, “This is so disgusting and embarrassing. I don’t understand how these people are supported like this.”
A representative for Kardashian did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
“Well, I’ll draw the line somewhere :(,” another person commented on Wesson’s post.
“I love Birkins but elephants are on another level. They’re like spiritual animals, that can’t happen 😭,” another added.
A third wrote: “This woman has no boundaries at all!!!”
However, some users came to Kardashian’s defense, pointing out that she didn’t buy the decades-old bag herself.
“I mean it’s already made lol…why are you mad? I don’t support hunting at all but she didn’t personally request this bag,” one person wrote.
The Kardashian-Jenner couple is known for their extensive collection of Birkin bags.
In 2024, Kardashian put a peacock blue Porosus Crocodile Birkin up for sale on her family’s Kardashian Closet website, and priced it at a whopping $49,995.
