Penn Badgley and his wife Domino Kirke were nearly separated after two tragic miscarriages.
The “You” star detailed the loss in his new essay book, “Crushmore: Essays on Love, Loss, and Coming-of-Age.”
“This was our second loss, at a time when we didn’t think the cycle would break,” he wrote. “My wife and I came close to separation, as many people do after experiencing a loss like this.”
He added that the main reason for this separation was that the couple felt “isolated” in dealing with the loss, as we live in “a culture where we don’t really talk about these things or don’t know how to support people who are going through it.”
Badgley, 39, added: “Seeing our baby in that stumbling black and white ultrasound image is now a terrifying memory that I can’t shake every time I go for an ultrasound.”
He reiterated the need to be open and talk more about miscarriages on Sunday’s Totally Booked podcast.
“This kind of loss is really common and we should do it — I don’t know if just talking about it is what we need to do,” he said. “At the very least, we need to start talking about it more. … They happen all the time, and they can be really, really painful. Well, I would say they are universally painful. Maybe not everyone is fully allowed to feel that way.”
It’s unclear when the miscarriage occurred, but the actor and Kirk, 41, welcomed son James in August 2020.
Additionally, Karke gave birth to twin sons in September.
Kirk admitted on Instagram that she was “surprised” when she announced her pregnancy in February.
“Spontaneous twins are beyond magical,” she wrote at the time.
Kirk is also the mother of a son, Cassius, from a previous relationship.
“The funny thing is, I wrote this before the twins were born, and now I feel like, and I want to lovingly say this myself, I feel like I’m drowning in my kids,” Badgley said on the podcast.
“So now that the cup is truly gone, it’s even harder to come to grips with that sense of loss.”
The “Gossip Girl” alum said she’s grateful she didn’t succumb to the “gravity” of separating from Kirk.
Kirk and Badgley began dating in 2014 and tied the knot in February 2017 at a New York courthouse.
They exchanged vows again that June.
