Cynthia Erivo introduces Elphaba at ‘Wicked: For Good’ New York Premiere

Cynthia Erivo never fails to bring magic to the red carpet.

The 38-year-old Oscar-nominated actress appeared at another Wicked: For Good premiere in a show-stopping ensemble, a nod to her character Elphaba, and reaffirmed her top-notch approach to press tour dressing and dressing.

Erivo wore a custom Pierpaolo Piccioli look for Balenciaga to the New York City premiere held at Lincoln Center in New York City on Monday, November 17th.

Erivo appeared at the ceremony wearing a black gown with a feather-trimmed turtleneck cape and a drop-waist pleated skirt featuring a train.

The actress and singer completed her look with oversized masked butterfly sunglasses and diamond jewelry.

“She’s a real witch in @balenciaga custom by @pppiccioli 🖤,” stylist Jason Bolden wrote on Instagram.

Erivo and co-star Ariana Grande chose to skip interviews on the red carpet, a decision announced hours before the event began and days after Grande was attacked by a man on the red carpet at the Singapore premiere.

The Elphaba actress lost her voice earlier that day, Universal confirmed to sources.

The two, who often appear together in the press, walked the red carpet together instead.

“Unfortunately, Cynthia is not feeling well and has lost her voice, so she and Ariana will not be available for an interview tonight,” the studio said in a statement.

Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey and director Jon M. Chu are also expected to attend, as well as Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Colman Domingo, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum.

Grande and Erivo embraced the roles of Glinda and Elphaba, respectively, giving method dressing new meaning on the press tour spanning Wicked Part 1 and Part 2.

The connection between Grande and Erivo’s characters is at the heart of The Wizard of Oz origin story, which will conclude in the upcoming Wicked: Part 1 sequel.

There are some differences between Wicked: For Good and Act II, which is based on the Broadway musical by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz.

For Good begins after the events of Wicked: Part 1. A rebellious Elphaba is branded as Oz’s enemy by the Wizard (Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Yoh).

Despite the ups and downs their characters face on screen, Grande and Erivo’s connection behind the camera remains unwavering, and shines brightest when they sing together.

“Wicked: For Good” will be released in theaters on November 21st.
