FX has canceled “English Teacher” after two seasons, Variety has confirmed.
The comedy series was created by Brian Jordan Alvarez and stars as Evan Marquez, an Austin high school English teacher who navigates a number of personal and political scandals on the job. The cast also included Stephanie Koenig, Sean Patton, Carmen Christopher, Enrico Colantoni, and Jordan Firstman.
FX has no comment.
“English Teacher” will first air in September 2024, and season 2 will air in September of this year. While Season 1 followed a model where new episodes were released weekly, FX opted to release 10 episodes all at once in Season 2.
Days before the release of Season 1, Alvarez was accused of sexual assault by John Ebeling, a former friend and co-star in the 2015 web series “The Wonderful Gay Life of Caleb Gallo,” which Alvarez created and starred in. Ebeling first made the accusation on Instagram and then expanded on the issue in a December 2024 New York Magazine article. Ebeling also accused Koenig, his ex-girlfriend and Alvarez’s best friend who, in addition to starring, wrote the screenplay for The English Teacher, of helping maintain a toxic dynamic between him and Alvarez.
The news of the allegations initially did not affect the fate of FX’s “English teacher” less than two months after the New York Magazine article broke. FX has renewed the series for a second season. Regarding this matter, an FX spokesperson said, “We reviewed the allegations raised by other media before the show began. We have not received any communications from Mr. Ebeling regarding any concerns. We have no further comment at this time.”
The network did not address the allegations in its press release about the renewal, instead including a congratulatory statement from president Nick Glad, who said, “‘English Teacher’ is one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of 2024, and we are grateful to the producers, writers, cast, directors, and crew for the creative excellence of the show. We look forward to the new season.”
“English Teacher” is executive produced by Alvarez, Paul Sims, Jonathan Krisel, Dave King, Kathryn Dean, Jake Bender and Zach Dunn, and produced by FX Productions.
