Detective John Luther is back on the case.
Idris Elba will star in Netflix’s next film, “Luther,” reuniting him with actors Ruth Wilson and Dermot Crowley. This is the streamer’s second feature film, following 2023’s “Luthor: The Fallen Sun,” which is based on the popular BBC TV show.
Series creator Neil Cross will write the script, and Jamie Payne will direct the sequel. In this chapter, Luther is secretly summoned when a new wave of brutal and seemingly indiscriminate murders hits London. “But how can he save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead?” the official logline asks.
“Neil has once again crafted a wonderfully dark story to unite us all, and I’m so happy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talent of Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley,” Payne said in a statement. “We’re also thrilled to be reunited with the wonderfully dangerous Alice Morgan, played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson. Fans old and new are in for a treat!”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news of the sequel, filming is expected to begin in February. Producers include Elba and Gina Carter and Tim Lewis of Chernin Entertainment, Cross, 22Summers.
“Luther” first aired in 2010 and ran intermittently for five seasons. Wilson, who did not appear in “The Fallen Sun,” will return as serial killer and scientist Alice Morgan. Crowley will reprise his role as Superintendent Martin Schenk.
“Luther, Alice and Schenck aren’t just characters to me, they’re family,” Cross said. “I always wonder where they are, what happened to them, and what horrors are happening in the shadows of London while Luthor is gone. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”
