Donald Trump says most Americans will receive $2,000 in tariff dividends

What you need to know

President Donald Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Nov. 9 that most Americans would receive a dividend from the tariffs, writing: “At least $2,000 per person (excluding high income earners!) will be paid to everyone.” Trump’s statement came amid a series of posts criticizing Democrats for the ongoing government shutdown.

President Donald Trump has said he will pay Americans a total of more than $2,000 in tariff dividends.

In a Nov. 9 Truth Social post, the 79-year-old president said he intended to use tariff revenue collected by the federal government to pay “dividends” totaling more than $2,000 to the majority of Americans.

“A dividend of at least $2,000 per person will be paid to everyone (except for high-income earners!),” he wrote in a post that also included some bold claims about the country’s current fiscal health.

In the same post, President Trump wrote, “Those who oppose tariffs are idiots!”

President Trump’s recent statements are not the first time he has raised the idea of a tariff dividend.

According to Business Insider, the president previously mentioned “distribution to the people” in an October interview with One America News Network. Trump said at the time that the total proposed “distribution” would be between $1,000 and $2,000 per person, the paper said.

A few months ago, Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley introduced a similar idea into a bill that would use tariff revenue to provide $600 rebates to nearly all Americans and their dependent children, according to The Hill.

The idea also comes as the Supreme Court reviews the legality of the president’s tariffs, many of which lower courts had previously ruled illegal, according to Business Insider. (Trump justified the levy under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.)

The president’s Truth Social post doubled down on Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s previous assertion that beyond the dividend proposal, the Trump administration would continue to prioritize using tax revenue to reduce the national debt, The Hill reported.

In a Nov. 9 post, President Trump said the government would “soon begin paying down our massive debt” using the revenue.

The U.S. Treasury collected a total of $195 billion in tariffs in 2025 through September, according to The Hill, citing an official Treasury report.

President Trump’s plan to pay out tariff dividends, a move that would likely require Congressional approval, was also shared in a series of posts primarily targeting the Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare,” and blaming Democrats for the ongoing government shutdown, which officially became the longest in history last week.

Even during the post scandal on November 9, President Trump continued to shift the blame for the government shutdown onto Democrats. The controversy centers on funding for health care benefits under the Affordable Care Act, a long-time goal of President Trump and other Republicans, and which Democrats also want to extend.

Without these subsidies, insurance premiums for more than 20 million Americans could double.

As a result of the historic government shutdown, millions of struggling Americans are now experiencing reduced and delayed food benefits, while health benefits are expiring.

Additionally, more than 600,000 federal employees have been furloughed, and more than 700,000 continue to work without pay.
