Kate Hudson recently revealed the best part of her nearly 30 years in Hollywood.
Hudson spoke to PEOPLE at the world premiere of his new biopic Son Saint Bleu on October 26th at AFI Fest in Hollywood, California. During the conversation, Hudson reflected on the “greatest gift” of his career.
“I think the first thing that comes to mind is the people and connections I’ve made along the way. Those always feel like the greatest gifts to me,” Hudson, 46, said.
“I feel so lucky to be involved in a world of endlessly fascinating, intelligent, wild people who live outside the norm, even if they (just) try hard to live outside of it,” she added.
The Almost Famous actress made her screen debut in the 1998 indie film Desert Blue, in which she played the daughter of a Hollywood star temporarily stranded in a small American town. The film also starred Christina Ricci and Casey Affleck.

Hudson’s latest project, the upcoming Son San Bleu, is based on the 2008 documentary of the same name and follows the lives of Mike Sardina (Hugh Jackman) and Claire Sardina (Hudson), a married couple who performed in the Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder.

Speaking to People at the Los Angeles premiere, Hudson said the film is the culmination of “everything” she’s done and worked on so far in her career.
“(…) All I wanted to do was do a musical. This is obviously not a (musical), but (…) this movie in particular is everything I’ve researched all my life and career. I’m going to do (everything) in one movie, and that doesn’t happen very often,” she said.

She added, “I’m really happy that[writer and director]Craig Brewer wanted me to do it.”
As for how the Running Points star landed the role of playing Claire?
“I think it was the hair,” she revealed. “The moment the hot rollers came in and came out, I felt like…a completely different person.”
Hudson went on to say that she deeply valued her character’s outlook on life, especially her ability to find the light even when things look dark.
“There’s something about Claire. She has a love for life. Even in the darkest moments, when you get to know her, she comes through strong with this light and joy and wants to make everything happy (…). And there’s something in that energy that I tapped into a little bit,” she explained.

Hudson also said that he got to know the real Neil Diamond during the filming process, and that the experience gave him a whole new appreciation for Diamond and his music.
“It was also a real dream to get to know him. He’s so wonderful, kind and loving, and his family is amazing. But Neil has this. He brings people together. It’s this kind of music that’s very American and at the same time makes people happy. There’s something about the songs he writes that makes people want to put their arms around each other and sing,” she said.
“Song Song Blue” will be released in theaters nationwide on December 25th.
