Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick’s three children: everything you need to know

Carrie Bradshaw may be the “last bachelorette” on HBO’s hit series Sex and the City, but Sarah Jessica Parker has been married to husband Matthew Broderick since 1997.

Since their wedding, Parker and Broderick have become parents to son James Wilkie, 22, and twin daughters Tabitha Hodge and Marion Loretta Elwell, 13.

In an interview with Bruce Bozzi on iHeartRadio’s Table for Two, Parker talked about her parenting philosophy regarding money.

“I want my kids to understand what it means to make money, what it takes to make money, and the value of it,” she says. “I think it’s a wonderful way of life for children when their needs to be fed, safe, and loved are met. The important things in life are books and food and interesting experiences. Those things are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. But children should want things, and they should want things.”

James Wilkie Broderick, 22 years old

Parker and Broderick’s eldest son, James Wilkie, was born at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan on October 28, 2002, weighing 6 pounds, 8 ounces. The couple named him James after Broderick’s late father, actor James Broderick.

After the birth, Parker’s publicist told PEOPLE, “Both mother and baby are doing very well. They are all healthy.” A representative for Broderick also told The Associated Press: “Everyone is really happy and ready to go home.”

In a 2008 interview with Parade magazine, Parker spoke about her parenting style and how she raised James.

“If I had been raised as a privileged child, I don’t think I would have become the worker I am today,” she said. “I have a great appreciation for the work, and I think my husband and I owe it to James Wilkie to set an example by emphasizing what it means to be indebted to the community and that he is not entitled to the benefits of our hard work.”

At the time, James’ wardrobe consisted of hand-me-downs and not much else.

Tabitha Hodge and Marion Loretta Elwell Broderick, 13 years old

On June 22, 2009, Parker and Broderick brought home twins Tabitha Hodge and Marion Loretta Elwell. The girls were born to a surrogate mother in Martins Ferry, Ohio. PEOPLE reported that the girls inherited the family names Hodge and Elwell from Parker.

“I’m so excited,” Parker told Access Hollywood ahead of the birth of her baby girl. “I can’t believe it. I’m so grateful. I feel so lucky. My son is so excited and my husband is so excited.”

Despite her excitement, Parker said she tried not to tell her son James too many details about the surrogacy. “I’ve been pretty frank with him,” she said. “I kind of gave him my policy because we wanted to keep this thing quiet. The girls headed to the set in Providence, Rhode Island, where Midler and Najimy were “in costume, but they were themselves, so it was confusing in a way,” Parker added.
