Jennifer Lawrence hates the press, says old interviews are ‘annoying’

Jennifer Lawrence recently told The New Yorker that she is hesitant to speak to the press while promoting the film. The Oscar winner has been a tabloid darling for 15 years, once telling fellow actor Viola Davis: “Every time I do an interview, I think, “I can’t do this anymore.” When I have to do press for a movie, I feel like I lose control of my craft. ”

When the topic of Lawrence’s old interviews came up, he grimaced and said, “Oh, no. So hyper. So embarrassing.” Lawrence’s outspoken and self-deprecating personality initially endeared her to the public, but was ultimately soured by claims that all perceptions of her online were fake.

“Well, that was my true personality, or so it was, but it was also a defense mechanism,” Lawrence said of Too Much Away in an interview. “So my defense mechanism was, ‘I’m not that kind of person! I poop in my pants every day!'” …When you watch that interview, that guy is annoying. I understand that you get irritated when you see that person anywhere. Ariana Grande’s impression of me on SNL was spot on. ”

In a 2016 skit on Celebrity Family Feud, SNL mocked Lawrence by having Grande say lines like, “I’m a snack addict. I mean, I love Pringles. If no one’s looking, I’ll eat the whole can.”

The public backlash against Lawrence has become “unlivable,” she told The New Yorker. “I felt rejected – not because of the movie, not because of politics, but because of my personality – I didn’t feel that way, and I certainly think I was,” he added.

Lawrence has publicly stated in past interviews that she needed to take a two-year hiatus from Hollywood after making 16 films in six years, a series of films that flopped at the box office and only fueled the negative public perception of her. she told Vanity Fair in 2021. “I think people were tired of me. I was tired of it too. It got to the point where I couldn’t do anything right. If I was walking the red carpet, they’d be like, ‘Why didn’t she run?’

Lawrence continued, “I was a people pleaser for most of my life. When I was working, I felt like no one could be mad at me. ‘Okay, I said yes, we’re doing it. No one’s mad.’ And I felt like I reached a point where just existing was no longer pleasing. So I let go of the idea that a job or a career was going to bring some kind of peace to my soul.”

In a recent interview on “The Graham Norton Show,” Lawrence revealed that he is “at peace” with his decision to remain away from Hollywood. She added: There’s a lot[of Hollywood]. …I think if it were me, I would have been (okay), but at the same time I would have been really upset. I don’t know. “

Lawrence is currently back in press for the psychodrama Die My Love, directed by Lynne Ramsay and co-starring Robert Pattinson. The film, in which Lawrence plays a woman whose life is meandering as she balances marriage and motherhood, had its world premiere at Cannes earlier this year. Martin Scorsese personally offered Lawrence to headline the film after reading the novel of the same name and thinking it would make a great movie. The two had considered adapting Kate Chopin’s 1899 novel The Awakening, but Scorsese did not think it would be a sufficient challenge for Lawrence.

“I said, ‘You know what? This is a challenge,'” Scorsese told Lawrence. “‘This is what you have to do. Take a chance. Knock your comfortable sense of character off the board and just go for it.’

Mubi will release “Die My Love” in theaters on November 7th. To read Lawrence’s latest profile in full, visit The New Yorker’s website.
