“Zootopia 2” returns to first place with holdover dominance

Disney’s “Zootopia 2” has returned to the top of the box office in China from January 30th to February. According to consultancy Artisan Gateway, each frame earned RMB 29.1 million ($4.1 million), bringing the total revenue to RMB 4.45 billion ($627.3 million).

The market remains sluggish ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, with the top five once again dominated by holdovers rather than new releases.

Taopia Opio’s “Busted Water Pipes” rose to second place in its second weekend with $3.1 million, bringing its total box office gross to $9.5 million. Directed by Zhou Defei, the film follows veteran police officer Yu Dahai (Eddie Peng) and his squad, whose impeccable criminal past is so underutilized that they start fabricating cases to look busy. However, when the police station’s main water pipe bursts, the team encounters an actual operation by Tomb Raider’s crew disguised as plumbers.

Warner Bros.” Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 masterpiece “The Shining” debuted in third place with $2.5 million. $726,000 of the revenue came from Imax screens.

“Return to Silent Hill” added $2.1 million to move into fourth place with $14.3 million.

Rounding out the top five, “The Fire Raven” added $2.1 million for a total of $61.5 million. Directed and written by Sam Quah, the film stars Peng Yu-chan, Alan Aruna and Zhang Ning, and follows the reopening of a long-dormant murder case, exposing a broader network of corruption and revenge.

Overall, China’s weekend box office grossed a total of $23.6 million. Year-to-date, the amount received was $284.8 million, a 73.6% decrease compared to the same period in 2025.
