Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce had a black-tie wedding, two people familiar with the event told The New York Times. A source revealed that most of the women will wear gowns. Two bridal stylists previously explained to ELLE the difference between white tie and black tie dress codes.
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding is just two days away, with a rehearsal dinner reportedly scheduled for tomorrow night at Madison Square Garden. Most details are being kept secret, but information about the dress code has been revealed, courtesy of The New York Times. Two people familiar with the ceremony told the newspaper that the wedding will be held in black tie. A source said many of the women will wear gowns.
The newspaper wrote that men are expected to wear “a tuxedo with a jacket, black bow tie, and matching satin-striped pants,” while women can choose from “floor-length gowns, sophisticated cocktail dresses, or dressy separates.”
A red carpet was set up in the Garden on Tuesday, then taken down and the color changed to purple, which is not surprising considering the event’s dress code.
Black tie is the second most formal wedding dress code, with white tie one step above.
Corinne Pierre-Louis, bridal stylist, fashion editor, and founder of Substack Forever and Always, previously explained to ELLE the difference between white tie and black tie, saying that guests at a black tie wedding “can have a little more freedom. They can wear a column dress, a ball skirt and blouse combo, or something a little more trendy (than white tie). It’s more like an Oscar after party than a royal wedding.”
However, the New York City environment can influence the type of dress your guests wear. Bridal fashion stylist Gabriel Hurwitz tells ELLE, “Bright, colorful or printed dresses are great for a black tie wedding in a tropical climate, but not necessarily for a black tie wedding in a city museum or hotel ballroom.”
Swift and Kelsea’s 1,000-plus guests will likely have different interpretations of black tie, but following the couple’s dress code is above all a matter of civility. “The dress code allows couples to curate the visual story of the day,” Pierre-Louis said. “When everyone has the same aesthetic, the whole event looks purposeful and elevated. Plus, it’s downright rude to ignore the requests of couples who are joining you on their special day.”
