Even Tom Hanks didn’t know Taylor Swift had recorded an original song for Toy Story 5 until just hours before its release.
“It was top secret,” Hanks told Variety at the Toy Story 5 premiere in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. “Literally, we didn’t know until that moment came. They took us into a soundproof room and said, ‘Tonight at 9 p.m., the True End title song is going to be played. It’s by Taylor Swift.'” So I said, “You guys have been keeping this a secret from all of us?” And we watched the movie without[the song]but there was a dummy thing in there. ”
Hanks added that he was “honored” to have a global superstar like Swift involved in the film.
“It’s like saying, ‘By the way, Judy Garland is singing ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ at the beginning of this,” Hanks said. That’s what it is. ”
Disney dropped numerous hints about Swift’s involvement in Toy Story 5, but her song “I Knew It, I Knew You” wasn’t officially released until June 1st. The release began the same day with a Toy Story-themed countdown clock displayed on the pop star’s website.
In Toy Story 5, Woody, Jessie, and Buzz face a new technological threat that threatens their precious playtime with Bonnie. Joan Cusack and Tim Allen return to the voice cast alongside Hanks. The new cast includes Greta Lee, Keanu Reeves, Craig Robinson, Alan Cumming, Conan O’Brien, and Bad Bunny.
At the beginning of Toy Story 5, Woody is separated from his friends while rescuing a toy that has been abandoned by its owner. The exhaustion of his adventures left a bald spot under his cowboy hat. Hanks said that when he learned that Woody was going bald, it felt like a natural part of the toy’s life cycle.
“That hat lasts, that hat lasts, that hat goes on and off,” Hanks said. “It’s a hard rubber cap, and eventually…hey, hey, a little sharpie color and the baldness will go away. And the stuffing, it seems like you have to push it up every now and then, but it’s got some organic material in it. It’s physics, hey, it’s physics.”
Toy Story 5 will be released in theaters on June 19th. See more photos from the premiere.
