The Game of Thrones movie currently has a working title of Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest.
The new name was announced as part of Warner Bros. CinemaCon presentation Tuesday night in Las Vegas. The title may change in the coming months or years. The first-ever big-screen “Game of Thrones” blockbuster was released as part of Warner Bros. Planned for “after 2027.”
News of the film first broke last month, and the only plot details announced were that it would be about Aegon I Targaryen, the first Conqueror from George R.R. Martin’s novel A Song of Ice and Fire. The Targaryens are the dragon-riding, incest-loving rulers of Westeros in Martin’s books and in the world of HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” including the prequels “House of the Dragon” and “Knights of the Seven Kingdoms.”
The history of Aegon I Targaryen was told in Martin’s book Fire and Blood, which chronicled the rise and fall of the various Targaryen kings. The original Aegon was the first to unite the kingdoms of Westeros under one ruler. He forged the Iron Throne from the molten weapons of his enemies and ruled the land with his two sister wives and queens, Visenya and Rhaenys. After his death, his successors continued to serve as king for many generations (many of whom also bore the name Aegon).
“Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest” will be written by Beau Willimon, previously the showrunner of Netflix’s “House of Cards” and writer of Disney+’s popular “Star Wars” show “Andor.” The world of “Game of Thrones” continues this summer with season 3 of “House of the Dragon,” and HBO has ordered a second season of “Knights of the Seven Kingdoms.”
