Sagar Pictures Entertainment (SPE) has confirmed the launch of a global studio business that will move beyond film and television production to an intellectual property-led growth strategy across games, music, consumer products and theme parks.
The Mumbai-based studio said it is transitioning from a traditional content company to a forward-looking entertainment company that aims to build franchises and original stories across multiple formats and platforms.
“India is home to some of the world’s most timeless stories, many of which have yet to be told on film. These stories are not only entertaining, but also convey deep spiritual and cultural wisdom. At Sager Pictures Entertainment, we are committed to creating world-class cinematic storylines while maintaining their authenticity. Our vision is to reinvent ourselves through storytelling for audiences across generations and geographies. This new chapter reflects our commitment to combining 70 years of tradition with innovation, global collaboration and future-ready entertainment experiences.” Sagar Chopra, CEO of Sagar Pictures Entertainment.
“The first step on this journey is ‘Srimad Bhagavatam’, a project that reflects the scale and ambition we want to approach storytelling. As we build this series and future series, we are focused on creating stories that are rooted in the authenticity and values that define India’s cultural heritage, but that can grow beyond film into meaningful experiences across multiple platforms,” Chopra said.
‘Srimad Bhagavatam’ is SPE’s first feature film series and is conceived as a seven-chapter theatrical story tailored for the premium big screen. It is a live-action film adaptation of the Bhagavata Mahapurana, one of the 18 major Puranas of Hinduism, which centers on the belief in Krishna as an incarnation of the god Vishnu, along with cosmology, genealogy, and mythology. The series is currently in production and follows the studio’s previous film adaptations of the Indian epics “Ramayana” and “Mahabharata.”
SPE is built on the tradition of the Sagar Banner, founded in 1954 by India’s Padma Shri honoree, film director and producer Ramanand Sagar. Under the leadership of Chairman and Director Moti Sagar, the group has made a name for itself in the spiritual, historical and family entertainment fields, producing films and television shows known for their adaptations of ancient Indian epics. According to BAARC India and other sources, the company’s productions reach more than 1 billion viewers in India, and its reach extends to the Indian diaspora around the world.
SPE operates as the film studio division of Sagar Pix Group with offices in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Built on more than 75 years of storytelling, the studio has produced more than 55 television series and 25 feature films for Indian audiences in India, South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and the global diaspora. Its catalog includes Indian National Film Award winners and award-winning television shows.
