The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards has announced the shortlist for its 2026 edition across the fiction, non-fiction, animation, student and future format categories.

Selected filmmakers will participate in an exclusive program of interactive sessions and masterclasses from June 8 to 11 at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, culminating with a gala ceremony on June 11 where winners in each category will be announced and awarded cash prizes and Sony digital imaging equipment.

Founded by Creo in partnership with Sony, the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards aim to give up-and-coming talent a career-defining opportunity by showcasing the realities of professional filmmaking and giving them the tools to advance their work. The 4th annual Sony Future Filmmaker Awards received entries from more than 8,400 filmmakers representing 162 countries and territories around the world.

The 2026 shortlist includes perspectives from around the world. Highlights include the stories of women freedivers from Tamil Nadu who risk their lives every day off the coast of Ramanathapuram; A Ukrainian ecologist takes care of water buffalo and ancient horse breeds in the Carpathian Mountains. The newly qualified teacher was experiencing ups and downs during her first year in a London classroom. Two brothers raised in an alligator sanctuary in Colorado. Additionally, when sheep begin to disappear, a Welsh shepherd whose flock is left untouched becomes the subject of community suspicion. A 90-year-old French piano legend prepares for his final concert, and three North Korean defectors will give first-hand accounts of the invisible forces that held them captive and what it took to escape.

The shortlisted filmmakers will advance to the next stage of judging, from which winners in each category will be selected by the 2026 jury, which includes Golden Globe-nominated director and producer Will Gluck. Rachel O’Connor, president of Pascal Pictures’ film and television division. Sony Pictures Animation co-director Adam Rosette. Director Justin Chadwick will serve as chairman of the jury for the fourth consecutive year.

Director Chadwick said: “This shortlist is a testament to the vitality of emerging filmmaking today. From intimate character studies to urgent documentaries, from experimental animation to fearless student productions, these films are arresting, bold in their vision, and bold in their execution. “Power is achieved and what is said matters. This program exists to give filmmakers of this caliber something more than admiration. It is direct and unprecedented access to the inner workings of the industry. The jury faces an enviable but difficult task.” Choosing the winners from such outstanding work means these filmmakers are setting a high bar. ”

Winners in the remaining categories will be announced on June 11th, while the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards has announced the winners of this year’s “Future Format” competition. The contest asks participants to respond to a technical brief that explores the creative possibilities of storytelling. Nigeria’s Innocent Yama Lamido won the award for “Creating Without Permission,” a “meditation on the space between creation and the moment.” As part of his prize, Lamido will receive Sony digital imaging equipment and be invited to attend a program at Sony Pictures Studios in June.
