FX has set the release date for the Snowfall spin-off series, The Drop: A Snowfall Saga.
The new series will premiere on September 8th on FX and Hulu. The eight-episode drama will be available to stream internationally on Disney+, with one episode released each week at 9pm ET/6pm PT.
“The Drop” follows the events of the FX series “Snowfall,” which investigates the crack cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles. Gail Bean and Isaiah John return as their characters Wanda Bell and Leon Simmons, respectively.
The official logline states:
“Wanda begins the series driven by a clear belief that West Coast rap has the power to reshape American culture. She brings together a ragtag group of geniuses and strives to lead them to the realization of all their dreams. To that end, she enlists those closest to her, including her cousins Lamar Kinsey (Asante Black) and James Kinsey (Peyton Alex Smith), and a group of unstable local rappers. – They must navigate the dangerous intersection of music and street politics as they track Artillery.” An internship with former D-Boy turned label owner Darryl “DG” Grant (Brandon Michael Smith) has already drawn him into a run-in with the police, but it also deepens tensions between Wanda and Leon, who have vowed to stay off the streets forever and seek redemption through a free legal clinic. How to build something lasting in a world that threatens to tear them down? ”
In addition to Bean and John, series regulars include Mykelti Williamson, Nikki Michaud, Brandon Mychal Smith, Isidora Goreshter, Eric Balfour, Richard Portnow, Zaire Adams, and Demetrius Gross. Quincy Chad, who played gang member Big Deon, also returns from Snowfall.
Malcolm Spellman, Dave Andron, Thomas Schramm, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, Trevor Engelson and Paul Garnes serve as executive producers. FX Productions is producing the series. “The Drop” was first rumored to be in development in 2023 and received a pilot order in 2025.
“Snowfall” was created by John Singleton, Eric Amadio and Dave Andron and aired for six seasons on FX from 2017 to 2023. The cast includes Damson Idris, Carter Hudson, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Amin Joseph, Angela Lewis, Michael Hyatt, Isaiah John, Kevin Carroll, and Susie Nakamura.
