Shania Twain recalled doing “unhealthy things” to “lose weight” while in Las Vegas in 2019.
The “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” singer said there was a time when she didn’t like the way her body looked.
“I stopped looking at myself in the mirror. I hated my body,” she told the Times in a new interview published Sunday.
“I’m like, ‘Oh, I can’t handle this changing body.’ But it was so unhealthy,” Twain, 60, added. “Who can’t look at themselves in the mirror?”
The five-time Grammy Award winner said that despite maintaining a normal lifestyle, her body started to change as she got older.
“So, all of a sudden, my stomach started to swell and I couldn’t control it completely,” Twain said. “You can’t just lose 5 pounds.”
The weight gain has led the country singer to do “very unhealthy things.”
“I was training my body more than nourishing it to withstand the strain,” she told the magazine.
However, Twain’s harsh habit of trying to lose weight caused her to suffer from malnutrition, resulting in injuries on stage.
The “You’re Still The One” songstress is now grateful that menopause has given her a new perspective on her body.
“Now I’m going to get a mirror and look at myself all day long!” she told the Times. “Menopause was a great experience for me because it taught me that there are some things you can’t control.”
Twain openly said that he loves his older body.
The country music star, who stripped off her top for a cover of her 2022 single ‘Waking Up Dreaming’, said showing off her ‘new body’ has become ‘liberating’ as she gets older.
“This is me expressing my truth. I’m happy with who I am and this is a way to share that confidence,” she told People magazine at the time, adding that anything can be “fashionable” if you wear it with “confidence.”
“I’m a woman in my late 50s, and I don’t have to hide behind clothes. I can’t tell you how good it felt to be photographed nude,” Twain added.
“As a woman who has gone through menopause, I have never been ashamed of my new body. I don’t even get emotional about it. I just feel okay about it.”
