Shaindy Reis becomes CBS News’ foreign editor

Sheindy Reis, a longtime reporter and managing editor at the Wall Street Journal, is expected to be named foreign editor at CBS News, two people familiar with the matter said.

A CBS News spokesperson declined to comment. But in a memo circulated Monday, CBS News President Tom Sibrowski informed staff that Clare Day, the executive who heads the Paramount unit’s London office, is retiring. Mr Reis will be based in London.

“Our London bureau will be moving to a new editorial leadership structure, introducing the role of a foreign editor who will oversee all international coverage,” Mr. Cibrowski wrote. “As part of this transition, it has been mutually agreed that Claire Day will leave the company on May 1st.”

Reis currently serves as the magazine’s deputy Middle East and North Africa bureau chief and is based in Israel. She helps manage a team of reporters spread across the Middle East while also conducting her own reporting. She joined the Journal as a correspondent in 2010 after an internship at the Dow Jones News Agency, and has also reported on finance and technology as a correspondent from Chicago and London.

CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss is known for having a special interest in Israel and Middle East issues, and her selection of Reis to oversee all international reporting may signal that that focus will continue. Weiss is also working to overhaul CBS News, which has experienced repeated layoffs since its parent company was acquired by David Ellison’s Skydance.

“Since joining CBS News in 2002, Claire has played an integral role in covering nearly every major international news event of our time, from conflict zones around the world to important leadership changes around the world and, of course, royal weddings,” Cibrowski said in a memo. “Throughout, she has been dedicated to the art of storytelling. She has also been relentlessly focused on the safety and well-being of people on the ground, and has always been a passionate supporter of her team. Claire has been a champion of courageous stories, an expert in complex logistics, and a great partner to teams across the news division. Her work has made a difference at CBS News.”
