Rose Byrne and Jenna Ortega star in Mary Bronstein’s Nasty. The project will be released by Warner Bros. New indie label “Clockwork” is a sports drama. “If” follows athletes as they fight for a spot on the Olympic gymnastics team and realize that their biggest enemy is their coach.
The film reunites Byrne and Bronstein, who co-starred in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, for which Byrne received an Oscar nomination. “Nasty” was featured on The Blacklist, an annual compilation of the best unproduced screenplays, and was written by Isabella Jarosz. This will be her first screenplay sale.
Production on “Nasty” is scheduled to begin this fall. Lucky Chap and Ortega, producers of “Barbie” and “Saltburn,” are producing the film.
Byrne’s credits include “Bridesmaids,” “Spy” and “Neighbors.” She received an Emmy nomination for “Damages,” also appeared in the miniseries “Mrs. America,” and led the Apple TV series “Physical” and “Platonic.” She was also nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in the revival of Noel Coward’s Fallen Angels.
Ortega is best known for his work on Netflix’s “Wednesday.” On screen, she starred in “Scream” and “Scream VI.” She also appeared in “Beetlejuice,” and will appear in “Clara and the Sun,” directed by Taika Waititi, based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, this fall.
Clockwork launched this year and will be run by former Neon CMO Christian Parkes. “The Rattle Creek Bandits,” directed by Park Chan-wook and starring Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, and Tang Wei, and “Ti Amo!,” the sequel to “Anora,” directed by Sean Baker.
