John Rambo, the prequel to the long-running action series, will be released in theaters next summer.
Lionsgate has scheduled the film for release on June 4, 2027. It will be released just before Disney’s Star Wars: Starfighter (May 28) and a few weeks before Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (June 11) and Warner Bros.’ Ocean’s Prequel (June 25).
“John Rambo” is an origin story that takes place before the 1982 action-adventure “First Blood,” starring Sylvester Stallone, that sparked the series. Sequels include 1985’s Rambo: First Blood Part II, 1988’s Rambo III, 2008’s Rambo, and 2019’s Rambo: Last Blood. The series revolves around a U.S. Army Special Forces veteran who was traumatized by his experiences in the Vietnam War, but also developed excellent military skills. He uses those abilities to fight corrupt police officers, enemy forces, and drug cartels.
Noah Centineo will take over the role of Stallone, co-starring David Harbor as Major Troutman, and Yao and James Franco in an unknown role. The cast also includes Jason Tobin (A Thousand Blows), Quincy Isaiah (Winning Time), Jefferson White (Yellowstone), and Tammy Tuptimthong (The White Lotus).
Djalmali Helander (“The Sith”) directed “John Rambo” from a screenplay by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani. Producers include Kevin King Templeton, Les Weldon, Jonathan Junger, Angela Russo-Ottstott, and Michael Disco. Executive producers are Sylvester Stallone, Anthony and Joe Russo, Trevor Short, Dallas Sonnier, and Amanda Presmic.
Lionsgate’s 2027 slate includes “Day Drinker,” starring Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz. Mel Gibson’s “The Resurrection of Christ: Part 1” and “The Housemaid’s Secret.” The studio is scheduled to release The Fall 2 and The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping later this year.
