Oprah Winfrey’s short stint as a singer still haunts her.
The former “Oprah Winfrey Show” host recalled her short-lived self-penned theme song “Run On” during an appearance on the “Baby This Is Kiki Palmer” podcast on Thursday.
As Palmer began singing the song, Winfrey responded, “Girl, go ahead.” “Okay, that’s one of the mistakes of my career.”
“What happened was I was trying to decide, ‘Do I end the show or not?'” Oprah said. “Then I talked to Jesus a little bit, and Jesus said, ‘You must go on.’ So I said, ‘Here’s this song.’ It’s an old spiritual thing. ”
“Then I realized I couldn’t sing, even though I was taking singing lessons,” she quipped.
The Emmy Award winner confessed that even adding a church choir for backing vocals couldn’t hide the fact that her rendition of the traditional spiritual song wasn’t very good.
“It was bad. You know it was bad,” she concluded.
The daytime TV star briefly sang her own theme song in the late ’90s, and her show aired nationally from 1986 to 2011.
This isn’t the first time someone has brought up Winfrey’s short-lived singing career.
The late singer Whitney Houston playfully sang part of the gospel-style theme song during her appearances on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 1998 and 1999.
After running her iconic talk show for 25 seasons, Winfrey finally left the series in 2011.
Although she went on to build a media empire, she never returned to music.
