‘Odyssey’ remains strong with $25 million on Friday

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” extended its reign at the domestic box office in its second weekend in theaters, thanks in part to the lack of major competition.

“The Odyssey” grossed $25.9 million domestically on Friday and is expected to gross $84.5 million by Sunday. This figure represents a mere 32% decrease from its impressive $124 million debut. By its second weekend of release, The Odyssey should have grossed approximately $283 million at the North American box office.

“The Odyssey” grossed $264.1 million worldwide in its opening weekend. This is an outstanding feat considering it’s a nearly three-hour drama aimed at adults. That divine achievement made it Nolan’s best-ever global debut, surpassing 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, which grossed $249 million. The film also happened to be Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever, at just over $1 billion. At this pace, “Odyssey” is also aiming for that record.

Second place went to the theatrical release of “Hadestown: The Musical.” The eight-time Tony Award winner raised an estimated $4 million on Friday. Rivals predict it will gross $9 million by the end of the week. Starring Reeve Carney, Eva Noblezada, Patrick Page, Andre de Shields and Amber Gray, Hadestown is a musical retelling of the myths of Orpheus and Eurydice and Hades and Persephone. Crosswalk served as the film’s distributor.

Disney’s live-action movie “Moana” came in third place on Friday with just $3.1 million domestically. “Moana” is on track to gross an estimated $10.8 million by its third weekend of release, which would bring the domestic box office total to $102 million. This is a disappointing result, considering the film comes with a $250 million price tag and could end up costing Disney $100 million. The summer of 2026 was an eventful one for the Mouse House. While films like “The Devil Wears Prada 2” ($688 million) and “Toy Story 5” performed well, underperforming films like “Moana” and “The Mandalorian and Grogu” ($340 million against a budget of $165 million) proved costly.

“Toy Story 5” ranked fourth domestically on Friday with $2.9 million. By Sunday, the company should have a profit of $10.1 million, according to rival estimates. That would push the legacy sequel’s domestic box office gross to a staggering $448.6 million through its first six weekends. “Toy Story 5” is expected to surpass the $1 billion mark any day now, overtaking “Toy Story 4” ($1.07 billion) and becoming the series’ highest-grossing film.

In fifth place was “Minions & Monsters,” which added $2.8 million domestically on Friday. The animated adventure has grossed $9.5 million by its fourth weekend of release, and is expected to gross around $155 million in North America. Despite earning relatively low revenue compared to franchise favorites like 2015’s Minions ($1.15 billion worldwide) and 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru ($940 million worldwide), Minions & Monsters continues to perform well, down just 30% from last week’s total. The film only cost $85 million to make, so it’s already a moderate hit for Universal.
