Niall Horan reflects on the death of his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne in his new song ‘End of an Era’.
In the first verse of the song, which was released on Friday, Horan, 32, sings, “We had it, pure magic/I remember what it felt like/Time passed so fast/I couldn’t say goodbye.”
He goes on to wistfully reflect on their early days, singing, “Things can change overnight.”
“Careless times, yes, we sure did have some/Naive eyes, yes, we sure did look young/Tears fall as the future comes/Slowly and then all at once,” he sings.
The lyrics of the chorus say, “It feels like letting go / Something I shouldn’t have / It’s over in one breath / The end of an era.”
Payne died in October 2024 at the age of 31 after falling from the balcony of her third-floor hotel room at the Casasul Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
At the time, Horan reacted to his friend’s “heartbreaking” death in a statement on Instagram, saying it “doesn’t seem real.”
“Liam had an energy for life and a contagious passion for his work. He was the brightest person in any room and always made everyone feel happy and at ease,” Horan wrote.
“Throughout the years, the laughs we made, sometimes the simplest things, will be remembered even through the sadness. We were able to achieve the wildest dreams together, and I will forever cherish every moment we had. The bond and friendship we had is something that will not happen again and again in a lifetime.”
In an interview with GQ in March, the ‘Slow Hands’ hitmaker revealed that his new single was inspired by the grief he felt after Payne’s death.
He also reflected on his last memory with Payne, visiting him days before his tragic fall.
“It was wonderful. (He) seemed to be doing well, laughing a lot and reminiscing about good memories,” Horan said, adding that she learned of Payne’s death while watching TV in bed at home.
“I just remember getting the message and I was like, ‘What?’ … I just didn’t think it was real,” he said. “I never expected to hear that someone so young had died, especially someone I had just seen. I went from shock to sadness and back to anger.”
