‘Blair Witch’ is back: Horror director Dylan Clarke will be at the helm of Lionsgate’s new initiative, ‘The Blair Witch Project.’
Original stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams will return to the film as executive producers. Eduardo Sanchez, Daniel Myrick, and Greg Hale have also been involved since the 1999 production, and will serve as executive producers for this film as well.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the new Blair Witch will bring the series’ complete mythology and legacy to a new generation of storytelling. The reboot was first announced at CinemaCon in 2024.
Williams and Leonard returning to the franchise is a huge development. After the reboot was announced, the cast gave an interview to Variety magazine and said they felt blindsided. No one at Lionsgate warned them that once again their faces and names would be published on the internet to hype a horror series they didn’t agree to be a part of.
Donahue said at the time: “We had some conventions booked. It’s nice to hear good words from the fans and meet the players. It’s the first time in the entire history of this thing that I’ve felt so happy. And then boom, this announcement comes. It’s like, dammit.”
Things seem to have been resolved as both actors are back in the woods again.
The Blair Witch Project is said to be based on the true story of three student filmmakers who disappeared while making a film based on the Blair Witch legend. It grossed a whopping $248 million and spawned a two-film series. Lionsgate currently operates a Blair Witch-themed escape room in Las Vegas called Escape Blair Witch.
Atomic Monster’s James Wan and Blumhouse’s Jason Blum will team up with producer Roy Lee to produce the new film.
Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath are the producers of Divide/Conquer. Steven Schneider will serve as executive producer. Michael Clear and Judson Scott serve as executive producers on Atomic Monster, with Alena Glaster overseeing the company. Scott O’Brien and Pavan Kalidindi are overseeing the project for Lionsgate. Phil Strina negotiated the contract on behalf of the studio.
