NBC has renewed the Emmy-nominated nature documentary series “The Americas” for a second season. Production is currently underway and Tom Hanks will return as the narrator.
The new season, scheduled to premiere in 2028, will delve even deeper into the wildlife and landscapes the supercontinent has to offer. In addition, a series of special episodes titled “The Americas: A Wild 250th” will be released on July 2nd at 9pm ET/PT on NBC and the following day on Peacock. NBC plans to air “The Americas: Mother’s Day” again in 2027.
“We’re excited to bring ‘The Americas’ into viewers’ homes and take them on a journey that further reveals the extraordinary worlds, iconic landscapes and remarkable wildlife that make North and South America so fascinating, all with a breathtaking blend of scale, discovery, humor and heart,” said Sharon Vuong, NBC’s executive vice president of unscripted programming. “With Tom Hanks’ unique voice behind the awe-inspiring visuals, and our partners at UTAS and BBC Studios Natural History Unit, Season 2 is poised to deliver even more of the series’ commitment to unique storytelling and daring exploration of the natural world.
“The Americans” Season 1 ranked as the most-watched new alternative show of the 2024-25 season, reaching more than 36 million viewers. An encore broadcast of the original season enhanced with fun facts and behind-the-scenes insights, “The Americas: Fun Facts Edition” now airs Thursdays at 9pm ET/PT on NBC and has reached more than 9 million viewers to date.
“‘The Americas’ was a bold gamble. A natural history film series of this scale hadn’t been seen on broadcast television in years, and thankfully it was well-received by viewers,” said Toby Gorman, president of Universal Television Alternative Studios. “The success of Season 1 gives us the opportunity to dream even bigger for Season 2, expanding our scope, pushing filmmaking to new heights and deepening the emotional connection viewers felt with the series. We are proud to continue our partnership with NBC, BBC Studios Natural History Unit and Tom Hanks as we bring this next chapter to life.”
