Rated B International has acquired worldwide sales and distribution rights to Robert Richardson: The White Devil, a feature-length documentary about cinematographer Robert Richardson, a three-time Academy Award winner and close collaborator of filmmakers Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Oliver Stone and many others. The trailer premieres here.
As previously announced, Richardson will receive the Crystal Globe Award for his contribution to world cinema at the world premiere of the film at the 60th Karlovy Vary Film Festival on July 5th.
Richardson has starred in Platoon (1986), Independence Day (1989), Snow on the Cedars (2000), Inglourious Basterds (2010), and Django. He received Oscar nominations for “Unchained” (2012), “The Hateful Eight” (2015), and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (2019). He won Oscars for JFK (1992), The Aviator (2004), and Hugo (2011).
“Robert Richardson: White Devil” explores Richardson’s “extraordinary contributions to modern cinema,” tracing his artistic journey and examining the visual language that has characterized some of the most acclaimed films of the past few decades, according to a company statement. “Through exclusive interviews, archival materials, and insights from collaborators, this documentary provides a portrait of one of the industry’s most influential filmmakers.”
Director Jana Hójdova said: “A few years ago, when I was living in Prague, I sent an email to Robert Richardson with little expectation of a reply. For me, he was one of the greatest cinematographers of all time, the creative force behind some of cinema’s most unforgettable images. A single message serendipitously began a multi-year journey that took me from Los Angeles and London to New Zealand and Sofia. I followed Richardson to make several blockbuster films, and he introduced me to filmmakers I had admired all my life.
“What makes this film so special to me is not only that Robert gave me special access, but that he trusted me enough to grant me access to hundreds of hours of his personal archives, including some of the most intimate chapters of his life. I can’t think of a better privilege for a young filmmaker. This film is my attempt to capture the passion, curiosity, sacrifice, and creative courage behind a life spent at the very pinnacle of Hollywood filmmaking.”
B-Rated’s Arnaud Chevalier said: “We feel this documentary provides a very personal and compelling perspective on one of the greatest cinematographers of all time. Through Jana’s personal story and her unique relationship with Robert Richardson, “This film also highlights an important chapter in American film history. We believe this documentary will appeal not only to film buffs and film professionals, but also to a wide audience who want to discover the people behind some of the most iconic images in modern filmmaking.”
Hóidova’s The Dream was nominated for Best Cinematography in the short film category at Camerimage and won the Jaroslav Kučela Award from the Czech Cinematographers Association. “Robert Richardson: The White Devil” marks his feature film directorial debut. Most recently, he shot the feature film “Chica Checa”, which was submitted to the Crystal Globe Competition section of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
