Mortal Kombat 2, the sequel to the hit 2021 video game, grossed $129 million worldwide and will be available to stream on HBO Max on July 24th.
Director Simon McQuoid returns after making his directorial debut with the first Mortal Kombat movie. The film follows martial arts actor Johnny Cage as he is scouted by the Gods of Thunder Raiden and Sonya Blade to join the warriors of Earthrealm in an interdimensional tournament against the warriors of Outworld. Earth’s warriors unite to stop the tyrannical Emperor Shao Kahn with the help of the ferocious Edenian princess Kitana.
While the original film featured some iconic video game characters, the sequel featured The Boys star Karl Urban as Cage and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana. Tati Gabrielle: Kitana’s childhood friend, Jade. Damon Herriman plays the dark wizard Quan Chi. Martin Ford: Shao Kahn, the evil emperor of the Outworld dimension. Ana Tu Nguyen plays Queen Sindel, Kitana’s mother. Desmond Chiam plays King Jerrod, Kitana’s father. CJ Bloomfield plays the fanged warrior Baraka.
The returning cast includes Lewis Tan, who plays the original protagonist Cole Young. Jessica McNamee plays Sonya Blade, a soldier. Ludi Lin plays the role of karate master Liu Kang. Mehcad Brooks plays Jackson “Jax” Briggs, who has a super-strong bionic arm. Josh Lawson plays Kano, an Australian murderer. Ching Han plays the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung. The role of Raiden is played by Tadanobu Asano. Hiroyuki Sanada plays the role of fighter jet Scorpion. Joe Taslim plays the archenemy Sub-Zero. And Max Huang plays Kung Lao, who wears a razor-pointed hat.
