‘Miami Vice’ reboot starring Michael B. Jordan, Austin Butler officially takes title

Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler’s “Miami Vice” reboot has been officially announced with a new title: “Miami Vice ’85.”

The Universal film, directed by “F1” and “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski, is scheduled for release on August 6, 2027, and production on the film, which is scheduled to be shot for Imax, is expected to begin later this year.

New Best Actor Oscar winner Jordan stars as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, while Oscar nominee Butler plays James “Sonny” Crockett. (Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson first played the suave South Florida detectives in the classic ’80s TV series. Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx then starred in their first big-screen adaptation, 2006’s Michael Mann’s “Miami Vice.”)

It was first reported last year that Jordan and Butler were in talks to star in the film. “Michael is someone I’ve admired for a long time,[and]always wanted to work with. I think Austin is proving to be someone to watch. Again, I really admire his choices,” Kosinski told Variety at the time, explaining why the duo was at the top of his wish list. “If it turns out to be those two, I’ll be very lucky.”

In fact, Jordan and Butler enter the film at the top of their respective games. Jordan won an Academy Award, a SAG-AFTRA Best Actor Award, and two NAACP Awards for his double role in Ryan Coogler’s blockbuster “Sinners.” Next, he will star in, direct and produce The Thomas Crown Affair, reimagined for Amazon-MGM Studios. This sexy trailer thrilled the CinemaCon crowd. Jordan is repped by 1v1 Entertainment, WME, Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole, and 2PM Sharp.

Butler’s transformative performance as Elvis Presley in Elvis added Buzz Loomlan to his list of directorial filmmaker collaborations (and also won him an Oscar for Best Actor). Since then, Butler has appeared in films with Denis Villeneuve (Dune: Part 2), Jeff Nichols (Bike Riders), Darren Aronofsky (Stolen), and Ari Aster (Eddington). Butler will next star alongside Jeremy Allen White in the A24 crime thriller Enemies. He is repped by WME, Brillstein, Sloane Offer Weber & Dern, and 2PM Sharp.

According to the film’s logline, Kosinski’s Miami Vice ’85 explores “the glamor and corruption of mid-’80s Miami,” and is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the groundbreaking television series that influenced culture and set the style for everything from fashion to filmmaking.”

Dan Gilroy wrote the screenplay based on the character created by Anthony Yerkovich in the television series, which was executive produced by Yerkovich and Mann. Eric Warren Singer wrote an early draft of the script.

Dylan Clark (Dylan Clark Productions) and Kosinski are producing the film. Executive VP of Production and Development Sarah Scott and Creative Executive of Production and Development Christina Hoflodge will oversee the project for the studio.

Kosinski, Clark and Gilroy are repped by CAA. Kosinski is also repped by Untitled Entertainment and Sloane Offer Weber & Dern. Clark also represents 42West. Gilroy is also represented by LBI and Behr Abramson Levi Johnson.
