Lizzo hit back at internet trolls who accused her of throwing shade at Taylor Swift.
The social media showdown began last Friday, when an
“The life of a showgirl + my face hurts from smiling — 4,005,000,000 👑. The Iceman + Maid of Honor + Habibti — 683,000 ⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️,” user X captioned the post.
Confused by the caption, Lizzo reshared the post and asked her followers, “Can someone please explain to me what this means?”
Haters online responded to the singer claiming that Lizzo fired at Swift.
“So what we’ve been talking about Tay for so long is finally getting through to you,” one person wrote, in a comment that garnered more than 2,000 likes.
Lizzo took note of the accusations and vehemently refuted them on Saturday.
“How are you?” she asked before digging in.
“First of all, I’ve never talked about Taylor Swift, and while I’m on the subject, I’ve never talked about any artists,” she continued. “Just because I name an artist doesn’t mean I’m saying it. Grow up.”
After Lizzo released her song “Famous” in 2016, which referenced Swift with lyrics such as “I made that bh famous,” several people claimed that she sided with Kanye West.
“Yes, you talked shit about Taylor telling us to stop gaslighting?? You literally sided with Kanye West in 2016, let’s stop-,” one person claimed in the comments section.
“Never?? Let me refresh your memory for a second. I’m so glad your career was ruined,” another person wrote, along with an old video of Lizzo rapping along to West’s diss track.
“You’ve been talking about her for years. Stop gaslighting,” another wrote.
However, others supported Lizzo, pointing out that the video does not prove she intentionally took a swipe at Swift.
“I hate Kanye but her doing a song with him is not about TS. Can you tell me more? I’m just asking,” one person wrote.
“She didn’t do that. Singing a song doesn’t make it that way,” agreed one supporter.
“I literally was about to say you don’t even talk about other artists, oh my god are they on IM A HEAVY LIZZO DEFENDER UNTIL I DIE IDGAF,” another wrote.
Despite appearing to show love to Swift’s nemesis a decade ago, Lizzo has made friendly comments about Swift in recent years.
During an appearance on The Breakfast Club in 2022, Lizzo, 38, spoke about how she writes about dating in her lyrics and warmly referred to herself as the “black Taylor Swift.”
“I really am, I’m petty,” she continued. “I don’t say too much bad about[my ex’s]character. It’s his behavior. I think, ‘He’s a good person, but this is what he did. Am I tripping?'” They’ll say, “You’re not tripping, you’re not tripping.”
That same year, she clapped back after West made a comment about her body.
