Juho Kuosmanen, director of Cannes Film Festival award-winning film “Compartment No. 6,” has completed casting for “Dream Come True,” a bittersweet comedy feature film inspired by a true story. His third feature film stars Magnus Millan (Another Round), Paprika Steen (The Family Likes Us, Festen) and newcomer Ellen Kiley.
The first plot details have been revealed for the film, which is scheduled to be filmed in Finland, Denmark and France later this year.
“Dream Come True” tells the story of Rasmus, a 43-year-old Danish commercial diver who makes a living unclogging drains and welding seams deep underwater. When Rasmus discovers a shipwreck while diving, Fortune smiles at him. Among the wreckage, Rasmus discovers thousands of new bottles of the world’s oldest vintage champagne. This is a treasure worth millions.
She has lived with her daughter under her mother’s roof for a long time, but this is her chance to start a new life. However, Rasmus would come to realize that some dreams are better left undiscovered.
Director Kuosmanen commented, “Diving and underwater adventure have been a passion of mine since I was a child. Ever since I started making films, it has been my dream to find a story set in the marine environment and the quiet world below the surface. This film is inspired by real events, but I took the story away from historical events and added the tragic tone familiar from my previous films.”
“While writing, I started thinking about Magnus Millan, the brilliant Danish actor who plays the main character, Rasmus. We drove thousands of kilometers across Denmark and decided to set the story primarily in Jutland. Jutland’s harbors, fishing boats and rugged seascapes are the perfect setting for an adventure film about a diver from a small fishing village who dreams of great accomplishments.”
Both of Kuosmanen’s previous films won major awards at Cannes and went on to receive successful international distribution.
“Compartment No. 6” won the Grand Prix in the 2021 Cannes Competition and will be distributed by Sony Pictures Classics in the United States and other major international territories. The film was selected as a finalist for Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards.
Kuosmanen won the Cannes Un Certain Regard Award for his 2016 feature debut, The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Maki, and the Golden Eye at the Zurich Film Festival and the Gold Hugo Award at the Chicago International Film Festival. In the New Directors Competition, a festival distributed by MUBI in the United States and the United Kingdom, “The Painters” (2010) won the top prize at the Cannes Cinéfondation.
Dream Come True is produced by Denmark’s Snowglobe’s Katrin Pols (Godland, The Worst Man in the World, The Fjord) and Jussi Rantamäki (Compartment No. 6, The Fjord), Kuosmanen’s long-time production partner with Finland’s Arm Film Company, in co-production with Germany’s One Two Films (The Holy Spider, The Secret Agent). Britain’s Portobello Productions (‘Coward’) and Sweden’s Kelson & Wick (‘Gentle Monster’, ‘Force Majeure’).
The film is supported by the Danish Film Institute, the Finnish Film Foundation, Vestdanske Film Puglie, Business Finland, the Nordic Film and Television Fund, the German Federal Film Board, Medienbode Berlin Brandenburg, DR, Yle, SR, WDR, ARTE, SVT and Creative Europe Media.
