A number of newcomers joined the domestic box office on Friday, including Magnolia Pictures’ “Normal” and Warner Bros.’ “Lee Cronin’s The Mummy” and Atomic Monster. However, neither could dethrone Universal’s “Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” which is aiming for the top spot at the box office for three weeks in a row.

“Lee Cronin’s The Mummy” earned $5.2 million on its first day in 3,304 theaters in North America and came in third place. The body-horror reinterpretation of Karl Freund’s 1932 classic is expected to gross about $12 million through Sunday.

Written and directed by “Evil Dead” filmmaker Cronin, the film tells the story of a journalist and his wife who track down their daughter after eight years of disappearance, only to discover that she has been corrupted by an ancient evil. Cast members include Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, Mae Karamawi, Natalie Grace, Shiloh Molina, and Billy Roy.

“Normal” earned an estimated $1.06 million from 2,060 theaters domestically, ranking No. 7. Rivals estimates the film is expected to gross $2.4 million in its opening weekend.

In “Normal,” Bob Odenkirk plays a small-town sheriff who discovers a disturbing secret while investigating a local bank robbery. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Derek Kolstad. Including other cast members. Ryan Allen, Henry Winkler, Billy McClellan, Lena Headey, Lena Jolie. Directed by Ben Wheatley.

Despite being new theatrical productions, it was a familiar one and two on Friday’s chart. “Super Mario Galaxy Movie” took first place with $7.4 million. Universal is hoping for $30 million by Sunday, which would bring the animated sequel’s domestic total to $350 million. “Project Hail Mary” came in at No. 2 on Friday with $5.22 million. An additional $18.5 million is expected to be added by Sunday. The domestic total is expected to reach $283 million by the end of the week.

Two other works made it into the top five. “The Drama” placed fourth at the domestic box office on its third Friday with an estimated $1.5 million. Director Christopher Bolgli’s romantic comedy thriller, which has earned an estimated $4.7 million through Sunday, should reach $39.5 million at the domestic box office. In fifth place was “You Me and Tuscany,” which earned $1.1 million domestically in its second weekend. An additional $3.5 million is expected to be added by Sunday, bringing the domestic total to $14 million.
