Matthew McConaughey has always been known as Kate Hudson’s “no-frills” friend.
The actress shared a rare insight into their friendship on Wednesday during a Time100 panel discussion at Lincoln Center in New York City.
“Matthew is a unique person. He is the most unique, wonderful, spontaneous, unpredictable man I have ever worked with,” she exclaimed.
“He’s competitive in a good way. He’s so fun to laugh with. He never gives up on anything. I love his unpredictability.”
The “Almost Famous” star explained that he empathizes with that side of the actor because he, too, is constantly “down.”
“At the same time, he’s very protective,” Hudson continued, sharing different sides of the Oscar winner that fans don’t see, noting that he is “a great father, a beautiful partner, and a family man.”
“He cares deeply about his work, but mostly about the human condition and finding peace of mind, or at least contentment. We have a lot of empathy in that regard.”
“Matthew is truly a unique and special person,” Hudson concluded with a smile.
The two are best known for playing lovers in the popular 2003 romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
Once Hudson got the role of Andy Anderson, it was she who suggested that McConaughey should play Benjamin Barry.
The two also co-starred in the 2008 romantic comedy “Fool’s Gold.”
In 2024, the singer revealed a funny anecdote about McConaughey’s hygiene, or lack thereof, on a movie set.
During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, host Andy Cohen answered a fan’s question about whether McConaughey, known for his penchant for deodorant, was forced to use deodorant during filming.
In particular, they filmed in Australia during the southern hemisphere summer.
“No, he doesn’t wear deodorant or anything,” she replied. “Neither do I, by the way.”
Hudson also admitted that he has a distinct smell and that she could “smell him from a mile away.”
