Madonna turned a devastating personal loss into one of the most successful albums of her career.
“She was really trapped,” a source close to the music icon exclusively told Page Six about the making of “Confessions II.” She and Stuart Price (who co-produced Confessions II and 2005’s Confessions on a Dance Floor) “really locked themselves in the studio and wrote the album,” she says.
In 2024, the singer’s stepmother, Joan Ciccone, passed away at the age of 81 from “a very aggressive form of cancer.” Just weeks later, her brother Christopher Ciccone also died of cancer at age 63.
In the wake of his death, the Queen of Pop turned her “memorial into music”.
The brothers were incredibly close early in her career, when Christopher was one of her backup dancers.
He also served as the “Like a Virgin” singer’s backstage dresser and show designer. He was also the art director for his sister’s “Blonde Ambition” world tour in the early ’90s.
He then served as tour director for the pop star’s fourth concert tour, “The Girly Show,” in 1993.
However, their relationship hit a rock in 2008 when Christopher criticized his brother in his memoir Life With My Sister Madonna.
After Christopher asked for help, they reconciled before Christopher’s death, which Christopher discussed on Jay Shetty’s podcast in 2025.
“And I had a moment where I was like, ‘Am I going to help the enemy?’ And I just did it,” she shared. “And it was such a relief. And a huge weight was lifted off my back, and I could finally be in the room with him, hold his hand, even if he was dying, and say, ‘I love you and I forgive you.'” That was really important. ”
A source pointed out to Page Six that Madonna, 67, has also been feeling more “remorseful” lately, following a health scare that led to her being hospitalized in 2023 when she was found unresponsive in her home.
She was intubated for at least one night, but later said it was “a real miracle” that she was alive.
“She’s been much more introspective than usual due to writing the script for the biopic Celebration tour and a health scare,” the source explained. “She really understands what a great life and career she has.”
The Grammy winner said as much in a recent Instagram post in which he thanked his fans for their support.
“Words cannot express how grateful and surprised I am,” she wrote. “The goodwill and positivity was incredible. I’m still pinching myself. …My dream was to make people dance this summer!! To bring joy to people! Dreams do come true.”
The source added that the “Evita” star had a “vision” for the album and “never wavered” in its execution. She has been working with a marketing team that has seen her in dance clubs and her upcoming performance at the FIFA World Cup finals.
“There’s a reason she’s Madonna,” the source said with admiration.
