HBO reality show follows housing dispute

HBO and A24 have released a trailer for “Neighbors,” a new reality series from the producers of “Marty Supreme” that examines outrageous housing disputes, revealing the lengths to which neighbors will go to protect what’s theirs.

Each episode of the six-episode late-night show, which airs on February 13 at 9pm, will feature a new “disgruntled” big-time neighbor and reveal bitter disputes over property lines, animal ownership and even yellow speedometers.

Neighbors was directed by Harrison Fishman and Dylan Redford, who spent two years traveling the country filming the series, immersing themselves in the lives of their subjects. The show moves from a ranch in Montana to a beach in Florida to the suburbs of Indiana. This will be A24’s first unscripted series.

In an interview with Esquire, Fishman and Redford said the inspiration behind “Neighbors” was a morbid obsession with viral videos of fights between neighbors.

“What we were really interested in was the idea that when you’re watching these videos, you’re only seeing one perspective,” Fishman said. “We were interested in the stories behind those videos. The world behind that one video, and the other people and what their side of the story was.”

They did not intend to mock the subject. “There are conflicting truths that we empathize with and understand,” Redford said. “We’re not interested in treating them as crazy and weirdos, because we don’t believe in that. We fundamentally believe that what they’re dealing with is real and takes up a lot of space emotionally and psychologically. And we want to validate that.”

The show will be executive produced by Central Pictures’ Marty Supreme team, Josh Safdie, Eli Bush, Ronald Bronstein and JP Lopez Ali. Fishman, Redford and A24 will also serve as executive producers.
