Harrison Ford, Spielberg hated the alien in ‘Crystal Skull’

The creative conflict between Steven Spielberg and George Lucas over Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was revealed in Spielberg’s oral history recently published by Vulture. Series producer Kathleen Kennedy said that both Spielberg and star Harrison Ford “were having a hard time with this movie” because “they didn’t want to do a Raiders movie with aliens in it, and I think they got into an argument with George about that.”

“I wanted it to be like War of the Worlds,” Lucas recalls. “Harrison said, ‘I’m not going to do any more sci-fi movies.’ And Stephen said, ‘I’m not going to do any more sci-fi movies.’ I said, “Stephen, this is perfect because it takes place in the 1950s, when flying saucers were all the rage,” and he said, “No.” We wrote about five scripts and eventually Steve and I compromised and said, “Look, what if they weren’t aliens, but they were from another dimension?” ”

According to Kennedy, Spielberg and Ford “weren’t 100 percent on board” with the story direction for Crystal Skull, which is “why it’s the weakest of the four movies Steven made. And that’s why Harrison was so committed to Dial of Destiny.” He didn’t want[Crystal Skull]to end. ”

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is the fourth film in the series, set in 1957 as Ford’s adventurous archaeologist takes on the Soviet KGB in search of the telepathic Crystal Skull. The sequel, which was released in May 2008 and grossed a whopping $786 million worldwide, received widely mixed reviews.

“Nineteen years after the last adventure, director Steven Spielberg and star Harrison Ford have hit the ground running with a story and style that stays very true to the secrets of this series’ enduring popularity,” Variety wrote in a positive review of the film.

Ford returned to the role of Indiana Jones in 2023’s Dial of Destiny, the only Indiana Jones movie not directed by Steven Spielberg. James Mangold took over filmmaking for the sequel, which received negative reviews and underperformed at the box office, grossing $384 million.
