Amazon Prime Video has received a series order for Skybound’s graphic novel “Stillwater.”
The project, from writers Greg Berlanti and Carly Rae, was first reported to be in the works on the streamer last year. Prime Video has given the show an eight-episode order.
“Stillwater” was created by Chip Zdarsky and Ramon K. Perez. The logline describes the film as “a disturbing horror-thriller that focuses on ex-convict Daniel West. When Daniel receives a mysterious letter in the small town of Stillwater that promises answers about his past and a large inheritance, he discovers a community where no one grows old, no one dies, and no one escapes.”
“We’re excited to dive into Stillwater because it’s so much more than the usual tale of immortality,” Berlanti and Ray said in a joint statement. “This is a horror show about a community that must decide what is worth forever and what they are willing to do to protect it. Chip Zdarsky and Ramon K. Perez have created an extraordinary world that is both horrifying and human. Such a beloved title. We’re so grateful to our partners at Amazon, WBTV, and Skybound for trusting us to bring this story to life. For our fans and those of you who are learning this story for the first time, we couldn’t be more excited to meet Daniel West and the spooky townspeople who await him. ”
In addition to writing the screenplay, Berlanti and Ray also serve as executive producers on the show, with Berlanti producing through Berlanti Productions. Berlanti Productions’ Sarah Schechter, Lee London Redman and Robbie Rogers will executive produce for Skybound Entertainment, along with Robert Kirkman, David Alpert, Rick Jacobs, Glenn Geller and Chip Zdarsky. Jonathan Gabay will also serve as executive producer. Produced by Warner Bros. Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Berlanti and Ray both have overall deals with WBTV.
“Greg and Carly have brought to life many of pop culture’s most iconic characters and stories,” said Channing Dungey, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD US Networks. “They are masters at capturing the heart of what makes a story distinctive and beloved by fans. ‘Stillwater’ showcases their ability to blend a heart-rending horror-thriller with the harrowing complexities of immortality, power, community and what it means to be human. We are grateful to our partners at Prime Video and Skybound Entertainment for their collaboration.”
It’s been a good week for Berlanti, with “Stillwater” being his second series order in recent days. It was previously reported that Disney+ had ordered a show based on the comic book series, Afterlife With Archie, with Berlanti as executive producer. He is also an executive producer on Netflix’s live-action Scooby-Doo series and is currently developing a drama pilot, How to Survive Without Me, on HBO Max.
Meanwhile, Ray is working on the HBO limited series “The Chains” with Damon Lindelof. Her other credits include “Watchmen,” “The Leftovers,” “Mindhunter” and “Westworld.”
“Stillwater is a truly original series that combines horror, mystery and psychological suspense in a completely unexpected way,” said Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios. “Greg Berlanti, Carly Rae and the incredible team at WBTV and Skybound have created a world unlike anything viewers have seen before – a world that is unsettling, emotionally rich and impossible to take your eyes off of. We are thrilled to be able to bring this incredible story to Prime Video viewers around the world.”
Ray is repped by WME, Untitled and Johnson Shapiro Sleweet & Kole. Berlanti is repped by CAA and Felker McGinnis & Ryan.
