Gayle King has detailed the shocking moment her ex-husband was cheating on her with his best friend.
“I went home and got him,” the journalist said of her ex William Bumpass, whom she was married to from 1982 to 1993, on Wednesday’s episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast.
She said to another woman wrapped in a towel, “‘I can’t believe you’re here and doing this. I can’t believe you’re doing this.'” And I even said, “I thought we were friends!” It sounded so pathetic. ”
To make matters worse, when she got there, King accidentally set off her home’s alarm system.
When officers arrived on the scene, they recognized Anker from the local news and asked for his autograph.
“I wanted to say, ‘Can you please take out the trash?’ But I didn’t,” King, 71, told host Alex Cooper, adding that she didn’t want police to know what was going on. “We just wanted to get them in and out as quickly as possible.”
The most important thing for King was protecting his children, daughter Kirby, now 40, and son Will, now 39.
Despite wanting to keep her lawyer’s affair a secret, the mother of two considered calling her friend’s husband.
Bumpass claimed the woman and her husband had a good marriage and begged her to stop.
He eventually drove the other woman to the station, leaving King to call her best friend, Oprah Winfrey.
The 72-year-old talk show host had some sound advice for her longtime friend.
Mr. King said: “She said, ‘Okay, let’s call my husband.'” I said, “Do you think I should call?” (She said), “Yes, please call me.”
The woman’s husband did not believe that anything happened between his wife and Bumpus.
“I said, ‘Okay. Do you think I should get some help? Does your wife have a pink satin pajama top? Does she have matching green mint panties? And, oh, by the way… there’s a semen trail on my bed. So am I delusional and out of touch with reality?’
Dr. King told the gentleman to “get rid of himself” and hung up.
The reporter was proud, but also said it took “more than two hours” to convince Winfrey to call.
The former couple gave their relationship another try after the cheating scandal, but Bumpass strayed once again and the pair decided to call it quits for good.
The author first spoke out about the incident in 2016, which led to her ex-husband apologizing for the way he played with women.
Bumpass’ rep told Page Six in a statement at the time: “I have been troubled by this life-changing choice. I have dealt with it privately, but…I publicly apologize for this serious violation that has dramatically changed all of our lives.”
He added: “I have nothing but the utmost respect for Gail and how she handled herself with such grace.”
Although the former lovers are now on good terms, King couldn’t help but poke fun at Bumpass, saying, “I just met him yesterday because it was my grandson’s christening. I just saw him. He doesn’t look very nice. No.”
