Jodie Sweetin said Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are still friendly with their “Full House” co-stars, years after they stepped away from the spotlight.
Sweetin spoke about the twins during an appearance on Black Eyed Peas member Taboo’s podcast “Comics and Kicks” on Tuesday, noting that they had a different experience on the iconic sitcom considering they were younger during filming.
“We’re all good friends with them, but they were eight years old when the show ended,” Sweetin pointed out. “Then they did all the movies and stuff, and I don’t know if they really always liked it.”
“So, for them, I think they walked away from all of us at the age of eight,” she added, noting that her own experience on the show was in their “formative years” from ages five to 13.
“I don’t remember much before I was eight,” Sweetin quipped.
“They have a different relationship than they do on set all the time. They may not remember being 2 years old and all of us walking around with them and doing things like this, but I do remember,” she continued. “It’s not about them.”
Sweetin stressed that Mary-Kate and Ashley continued to embrace their love of fashion and stepped out of the spotlight because acting was “not their thing” and they “didn’t want to be in the spotlight.”
The twins refused to reprise their roles as Michelle Tanner on Netflix’s Full House revival, which ran for five seasons from 2016 to 2020. The original series aired for eight seasons from 1987 to 1995.
“They had so much stuff and it was so invasive that I completely understand why they wouldn’t want to do it for public consumption,” Sweetin said, referring to the child star’s past.
Mary-Kate and Ashley, now 40, appeared in a number of films in the ’90s and early ’20s, including 1993’s Double, Double Toil and Trouble, 1999’s Passport to Paris, 2000’s Our Lips Are Sealed and 2004’s New York Minute.
Although the two founded a successful luxury fashion brand, The Row, they remained extremely private about their personal lives.
The couple made a rare public appearance at her brother Trent’s wedding in May.
Mary-Kate and Ashley appeared in distinctive all-black outfits in a family wedding photo posted by Trent and his wife Alexis. Ashley’s husband, artist Louis Eisner, was also in the photo, as was her sister Elizabeth Olsen, who is currently expecting her first child with husband Robbie Arnett.
Back in October 2023, Full House star John Stamos revealed that the Olsen twins attended their on-screen father Bob Saget’s funeral, calling the reunion “so beautiful” during an appearance on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show.
“(They) brought us all together and said, ‘We love you. We loved our childhood. We appreciate you. Thank you for making those eight years so beautiful for us. We have such fond memories,'” he recalled.
Stamos added, “And everyone just needed to hear it.”
