Fifth Season and Harborview Equity Partners have entered into a multi-picture financing agreement that will help the independent film and television production company bring a number of projects to fruition, including Dev Patel’s “The Peasant” and Mila Kunis’ thriller “Night Watching.”
The deal further strengthens Harborview Equity’s investments in film, television and music as it bets on a transitional period in entertainment media. The company has made a number of investments in promising indie production ventures, including Charles D. King’s MACRO and “The Long Game” producer Mucho Mass Media. We also have a growing portfolio of music and music publishing assets.
Fifth Season is a mid-sized indie owned since 2022 by CJ ENM, one of South Korea’s largest entertainment and retail conglomerates. The Fifth Season is CJ ENM’s biggest foray into U.S. film and television production.
“This partnership gives us the opportunity to further expand our lineup of premium films,” said Chris Slager, President of Fifth Season Films. “Harborview brings a sophisticated understanding of the entertainment ecosystem and a shared belief in the value of quality storytelling from exceptional talent. We look forward to working with them on future films such as The Peasant, The Nightwatch, and other similarly resonant films.”
HarborView Equity is a growing investment company with a distinguished music catalog that includes works by Kelly Clarkson, T-Pain, Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, James Fauntleroy, George Benson, Luis Fonsi, Christine McVie, Pat Benatar, Neil Girardo, Nelly, Wiz Khalifa, and Kane Brown.
“At Harborview, we approach entertainment IP the same way we approach music IP: building a diverse, curated portfolio around revenue-generating, culturally-resonant content, and selectively layering our forward pipeline with the most disciplined creative partners,” said Shelley Clark, founder and CEO of Harborview Equity. “Fifth Season is just such a partner, and projects like The Peasant and Nightwatch reflect the type of opportunities we are focused on, with distribution already secured, top talent and stories that resonate globally.”
Peasant was scooped by A24 this time last year on the eve of the Cannes Film Festival. Patel starred in, directed, and co-wrote the screenplay with Will Dunn. According to Fifth Season, the film “follows a 14th-century shepherd seeking revenge against the mercenaries who ravaged his community, and his true nature is revealed as he hunts down the mercenaries.” ‘Peasant’ is produced by Fifth Season in association with India Take One Productions, Minor Realm and Thunder Road Pictures.
“Night Watching” also stars Clancy Brown and Corey Hawkins. The production comes from The Fifth Season, Ridley Scott and his Scott Free Productions, Picturestart, and Kunis’ new banner Brick for Sheep. According to Season 5, the film is “an intense thriller that follows Lee, a mother who struggles to protect her children in a harrowing game of suspicion and danger when she discovers an intruder in her home during an unrelenting winter storm.”
The transaction was negotiated by Liz Polk of the BALA firm, and attorney Evie Whiting of Sidley Austin and Dan Stutz of the Stutz Law Firm served as Harborview’s legal advisor on the transaction.
