The genre is on the rise, and Fantasia’s Frontieres and Toronto Festival’s TIFF: The Market are ensuring Canadian filmmakers reach the pinnacle this fall.
Frontière, the international genre co-production market hosted by Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival, in collaboration with TIFF: The Market, will launch a new genre market showcase with its inaugural event this September.
This showcase will focus on three Canadian titles and two international titles in various stages of development. For the first time, authorized market participants are in for a look at the stories brewing in the minds of some of the most exciting creators in modern genre filmmaking.
The call for submissions for the new showcase opens today (May 28) for all genre subgenres and titles in development.
Charles Tremblay, Head of TIFF:The Market, said: “We are excited to partner with Frontière on this dynamic new initiative.” “One of our main objectives in the market is to create space for great Canadian talent and projects that gain global attention.
“By aligning our strengths, we are building a viable platform for unique genre content to not only expand opportunities for storytellers, but also reach a broader audience.”
TIFF: The Market partnership continues Frontière’s global expansion and follows the recent announcement of a new gap financing program for genre films launching this fall at TIFFCOM in Tokyo, as well as previous success at this year’s European Film Market, an evolving partnership with Cannes’ Marché du Film, and the return of the flagship four-day market event at the Fantasia International Film Festival in July.
The team at Fantasia and Frontieres, long front row center of Toronto’s popular sidebar Midnight Madness, are jewels of the genre’s world and have premiered dangerously hot acquisitions over the years.
“TIFF has always been a fundamental pillar of our industry, and we’re proud to partner with Market on this special showcase that spotlights Canada’s visionary filmmakers and bold new voices shaping the future of genre cinema,” Fantasia Deputy Director Tania Morissette told Variety. “This is a great opportunity to support the project at a pivotal stage in its journey and connect with collaborators and industry leaders around the world.
Notable Canadian genre films that have entered the Frontieres market program in recent years include Zarara Khan’s In Flames, Annick Blanc’s Hunting Daze, Avalon Fast’s Camp, Ramsey Fendal and Deanna Milligan’s Lucid, Seb McKinnon’s The Stolen Child, and this year’s highly anticipated Ancestral Beasts. Tim Riedel.
The Frontières International Co-Production Market is funded by Telefilm Canada, SODEC, the Government of Quebec, the City of Montreal, Tourism Montreal, le Conseil des Arts de Montréal, and RDV Canada.
TIFF: The market will be held from September 10th to 16th. Registration is currently being accepted. Early bird pricing ends June 5th. Exhibition space is also available.
Funded by the Government of Canada and supported by lead supporter Telefilm Canada, TIFF: The Market expands TIFF’s reach, strengthens its role as the global entertainment industry leader in screen-based storytelling, and fosters sustainable growth for the industry around the world.
In conjunction with the festival, TIFF: The Market will facilitate the buying and selling of screen-based projects, intellectual property, and immersive and innovative content across all platforms, elevating Canadian and international talent while facilitating global distribution and sales.
