Wanda Sykes says Bill Maher confronted her after he disrespected her on stage at the Golden Globe Awards in January.
“Some people are upset that a queer black woman is here doing the job of two mediocre white men, but I want to give them some love first,” Sykes joked after accepting the award for best performance in stand-up comedy.
Sykes began hand-picking candidates, starting with Bill Maher. “Bill Maher, you give us so much, but I need a little less,” she said. The camera caught Maher staring at the stage with a slight smile on his face, as if he didn’t know how to react. “Try less,” Sykes continued.
Sykes told Jesse David Fox on Vulture’s “Good One” podcast that Marr stopped the cartoonists as they were waiting for their cars after the Golden Globes.
“He was like, ‘What was that?'” And I was like, “You’re kidding, Bill.” He’s like, “Well, I mean, that wasn’t even a joke.” I said, “Oh, no, I heard laughter.” It was clearly a joke. ”
Sykes continued to discuss the bit with her, imitating Maher. So Sykes told him, “See? You’re doing exactly what we said in the joke. We don’t need any more. You’re living the joke. No more.” Sikes said, laughing. “He didn’t care about that.”
Mr Marr apparently continued to tell Mr Sykes that he had been getting “a lot of emails” and that “it was just a stupid joke”.
“When he said ‘stupid,’ I was like, ‘Okay, you get it now,'” Sykes said on the podcast. “I was like, ‘Well, I got a bunch of texts telling me how great it was and they don’t like you, and it was really funny. That’s the problem. You’re watching FOX News, and I’m here on MSNBC.’ Then he asked me to be on his podcast. I was like, ‘Absolutely not.'”
