The BBC has acquired the thriller series Kabul, starring the late Eric Dane and ‘Tehran’s’ Sherbin Alenabi, from Media One Rights.
The six-part show follows the chaotic evacuation of a variety of characters, including diplomats, soldiers and civilians, against the backdrop of the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan as the Taliban return to Kabul.
The synopsis reads: “Kabul, August 15, 2021. As American troops withdraw, the Taliban invade the city. Like many civilians, the Nazari family is forced to flee, fearing retaliation. This desperate situation is overshadowed by the imminent threat of attack by ISIS. In a desperate and chaotic situation, a French police officer, an Italian diplomat, a German military officer, and an American intelligence agency must somehow work together to manage the influx of civilians. ”
Produced by France’s 24 25 Films and Cinétévé, the film stars Jonathan Zaccai (Legends), Thibault Evrard (The Twelfth Night), Vassilis Koukaraoui (Kandahar), Jeanne Goursault (Pax Massilia), and Gianmarco Saulino (L’estate piu Calda). and Valentina Cervi (“Medici: The Masters of Florence”).
The series is directed by Kasia Adamik (No Escape) and Olga Chazidas (Imago), with a screenplay by Olivier Demangel (Atlantiques, November), Thomas Finkelkraut (Thomas Finkelkraut), and Joey Lavie (The Shift).
Nick Leigh, head of program acquisition at the BBC, said: “Kabul is a high-stakes tragedy.” “Exactly five years ago this summer, a warzone story set in motion by a real ticking evacuation clock. World politics remain complex, but ‘Kabul’ dramatizes the largest perspective of history through the smallest window of the human family.”
Producers are Fabienne Servan-Schreiber and Charlotte Ortiz of Cinétévé, Matthias Weber and Thibault Gast of 24 25 Films (a Media One Company). Sandrine Paquot executive produces. The series was created in collaboration with European Alliance, with global sales handled by MediaOne Rights.
‘Kabul’ will launch on the BBC’s streaming platform iPlayer on August 2nd and will be broadcast on BBC Four from August 15th.
