Director Christopher Nolan recently told Today that it would be “at least” three years before he makes another movie after putting all his effort into “The Odyssey.”
“I think I definitely reached the limit of my own stamina and everyone’s stamina,” Nolan said. “So this is The Odyssey. Of course it’s supposed to be difficult. If it doesn’t look difficult, we’re not doing our job right in making an Odyssey movie.”
One of the many challenging aspects of The Odyssey was that it was shot entirely on Imax cameras. Director Nolan recalled telling his team at IMAX before filming, “If I were to fulfill my dream of shooting an entire movie that way, this would be it. This is “The Odyssey.”
Nolan wouldn’t have wanted it any other way, even if The Odyssey turned out to be a brutal film. He recently told the New York Times that studios should stop playing it safe with blockbusters because audiences are hungry for “something new.”
“If you’re really interested in movies and movie history, one thing you absolutely know is that to succeed you have to take risks. The biggest risk of all is to play it safe,” Nolan said. “That doesn’t work in mainstream cinema. Audiences want something new.”
The Odyssey is based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic and tells the story of Odysseus and his difficult journey back to his homeland after his victory in the Trojan War. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, with an all-star cast including Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron.
